As you can see above, both kids had baby eczema pretty bad on their faces. Luckily it didn’t last very long or at least not as severe. In my daughter’s case, she also developed an infection on the side of her face from scratching so much and having bacteria get inside.

In that case, her doctor had to prescribe an antibiotic to stop the growth of bacteria. Once, treatment started for a week, the bacteria went away and so did her scratching in that area.

The best products for eczema care are a combination of thick moisturizing cream and a layer of petroleum jelly over it to seal in moisture. When the eczema flares up then a hydrocortisone steroid gel is needed.

Our pediatrician prescribed two different treatment gels since one can only be used when the rash is really bad. It can only be used twice a day for a short period of time. The other gel can be used more often throughout the day.

What is eczema?

Eczema is a skin condition that shows up as patches of red or dry skin. Eczema is also called infant eczema or atopic dermatitis.

This makes the skin very itchy and the scratching makes it worst.

In babies it’s so much harder to keep them from scratching themselves and irritating their skin. The irritation leads to broken skin which in turns attracts bacteria and can make condition worst.

Why does eczema happen?

Eczema happen sometimes due to family history of other allergies or asthma. It also is very common among newborns and it is very treatable. Many babies will outgrow it. Some people will continue to have them in mild cases in adulthood.

I know from experience as both my kids have eczema as babies. Watching them scratch so much and making themselves bleed is hard to see. We try to keep them in loose fitting cotton clothing and latter cream/petroleum jelly on them constantly to relief the itch.

After a year of my son’s life living with eczema, his doctor tested him for food allergies. It turned out he was allergic to plenty of things. He was allergic to soy, eggs, peanuts, garlic, pet dander, and dust mites. Food allergies also make the skin break out in hives or rashes, which was happening to my son.

Once, we eliminated those allergens, his itching wasn’t as bad anymore. The doctor did also suggest we give him 24 hour allergy medicine and Benadryl at night to help him sleep. We did that for many years until he grew out of some of the food allergies and eczema wasn’t bad anymore.

Babies can get the rash in many places on their body. This includes behind the knees, along their legs, ankles, fold of their arms, wrist, on their neck, or cheeks.

Weather also makes the condition worst at times. The heat is bad for eczema since it makes the babies sweat and itch which in turns leads to more scratching.

The winter time is also bad for eczema as well because our homes usually will have the heater on. To counter the heater’s dry heat, you should use a humidifier in the bedroom where baby sleeps. The moist air will help prevent dry skin.

Like I said it’s so much harder to keep babies from scratching so much and making their skin bleed at times. It’s best to dress babies in loose cotton clothing so there’s air flow. Tight clothing will not let air flow to the skin and makes the rash stick around longer.

The Last Thing You Need to Know about Eczema care

Remember to avoid the trigger factors that causes the flare ups. Keep skin clean and moisture a lot to keep skin hydrated. Eczema can be contained and will go away within days or weeks. There are many relief creams/gels out there that can help with eczema care.

For babies that can’t stop themselves from scratching themselves constantly, put mittens or long socks on their hands. I put the hydrocortisone gel then a layer of petroleum jelly on their hands before bed and put socks on them so they don’t scratch themselves all night. If their eczema isn’t present on hands, but dryness is still put the petroleum jelly and socks each night for bed time.
